In an effort to bring back Babylon High School’s “Rec Nights,” the Babylon Surf Club hosted a movie night on Wednesday, December 18th. As winter break was on the horizon, Babylon students got cozy in Rowe Hall with one of the most iconic surfing movies of all time: Chasing Mavericks.
The Babylon Surf Club could not have chosen a better movie for the occasion. Chasing Mavericks follows the indelible spirit of late big-wave surfer Jay Moriarity and his journey to conquer the deadliest wave: Mavericks. The movie transcends lessons on surfing and spoke to the core values of life, family, relationships, and achievements. As Mr. Cropsey sat in the back he watched as every student, even those who had seen the movie countless times, held their breath as Jay dropped in on the wave of his dreams. While not everyone in attendance was a surfer, everyone left with a greater appreciation of the sport to which Moriarity dedicated his short-lived life to.
Throughout the night, the club sold some of their iconic merchandise along with some limited-edition items. While the classic stickers seen in surf spots around the globe were obviously present, students also saw the new car fresheners and water bottles. To end the night, Mr. Cropsey treated the audience to a raffle of two limited edition Gerry Lopez (another surf legend) posters.
This event represents Babylon Surf Club’s larger scale effort to showcase all that surfing has to offer, even out of the water. Alongside their surf trips and contests, the club hosts events like movie nights and beach clean ups that capture the core values of surfing without ever getting wet.
